Types of Emissions Testing
Emissions Testing is a routine procedure to determine how clean your vehicle is, and to keep track of the pollutants it emits. The test usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on state regulations. Emissions testing can be performed on many types of vehicles. In general, the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) test is the most common type of emissions inspection. This test verifies that the Check Engine light is functioning correctly and that the vehicle has an internal emissions diagnostics system.
OBDII emissions inspection
A vehicle’s OBDII emissions inspection checks the engine’s emissions. A properly-maintained vehicle will use less fuel and produce fewer emissions. Vehicles with a clean OBDII inspection report are deemed compliant and pass the inspection. Vehicles that do not pass the OBDII emissions inspection must undergo a non-exempt vehicle inspection.
OBDII emissions inspections are required for most gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. These vehicles must be less than eight thousand pounds gross vehicle weight. The vehicle’s emissions diagnostic system monitors and reports if the car has any problems. If it detects a problem, a malfunction indicator light will light up.
Failure to pass an OBDII emissions inspection can prevent renewal of registration. The vehicle must undergo repairs and must pass an emissions re-inspection before it can be re-registered.
Low-Enhanced emissions inspection
A Low-Enhanced emissions inspection is a required part of the New York State emissions inspection program. The program covers the five boroughs of New York City as well as the counties of Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland and Westchester. Vehicles whose gross vehicle weight rating is under eight thousand pounds must receive this inspection. The fee for a Low-Enhanced emissions inspection is $21.
Low-Enhanced emissions inspections are required for gas-powered vehicles. However, diesel-powered vehicles are exempt. WLTP emissions inspection
The WLTP emissions inspection is a global standard that determines CO2 emissions and pollution levels from a vehicle. It is also used to measure fuel efficiency and range for electric vehicles. The new WLTP emissions inspection procedure is similar to the New European Drive Cycle (NEDC), but is more realistic and based on real world driving conditions.
