When looking into different HVAC systems when buying a home or changing your system that is already in your home, it is important to know what you are buying. Most understand that different systems have different issues or benefits, but there is one area that most people usually gloss right over. Filters. Filters in your system can sometimes make or break your HVAC. These filters, also called air filters or furnace filters, are a very important component of any HVAC system and it is important to know what filters to use in your home.
Here are 2 very important details to know about HVAC filters.
What are the different types of filters?
There are 5 different kinds of filters. Fiberglass/Synthetic fiber filters, polyester filters, electrostatic filters, pleated filters, and HEPA filters. Fiberglass/synthetic fiber filters are the cheapest and most easily disposable option to use. They can catch up to 80% of the particles that are around 50 microns or larger and about 25% of the particles that are between 3 to 10 microns. Polyester filters are made from the highest quality materials that are available. They can catch 80% to 95% of particles 5 microns and larger, making it a much more efficient filter than the previous, but it also costs 4 times as much as the previous. Electrostatic filters use the self charging fibers to attract particles and dust out of the air. They are one of the most efficient and reusable filters on the market and very effective in any home. Pleated filters are literally what they are called: material that has been pleated and turned into a filter. These filters have higher results than any other filter because they trap particles that are 0.3 microns and higher. HEPA filters, or high efficiency particulate air filters, are high end filters that trap 99% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger. They are equally as efficient as the pleated filters, but are just made of higher end materials.
What is important to have a good filter?
It is extremely important to have good quality air filters. Good filters can make our air cleaner and healthier for you to breathe in. It is also important to eliminate all bad particles and bacteria so that you can live an all around better and healthier life. A good filter also helps reduce the risk of your HVAC system breaking down. A dirty filter can cause major breakdowns in your systems, so having a clean and good filter can help prevent you from having to spend major amounts of money fixing your system. A clean and good filter can also help save energy costs. A dirty and bad filter can cause the system to run more and break, so having that cleaner and good filter can prevent major increases in energy.
